Hello and welcome to this Jason King Insight.

In the dead of night, the streets of Great Barr bore witness to a chilling spectacle – the unravelling of the sinister operations of Joshua Barrett, a man entrenched within the world of organized crime in Birmingham. Sinister discoveries awaited officers, as the flashing lights of law enforcement illuminated his Vauxhall Corsa on Walsall Road.

Firearms officers swooped in and made their move Barrett as steered his way towards Birmingham. Intelligence had set officers on his trail, having gleaned information identifying Barrett as someone with access to illegal weapons. And this daring operation was set to deliver on its promise and turn up the goods.

Intercepted on Walsall Road, Great Barr, Barrett had a secret package tucked away in his car - a shotgun, sitting inside a black holdall covered up with a nondescript bin bag on the car's back seat.

Although decommissioned, Barrett was in possession of tools and the gun showed suspicious marks, sinister signs that this shotgun was being converted to become a live weapon, ready for whatever deadly enterprises Birmingham's criminal underworld had in mind.

Alongside the menacing firearm, a stash of two mobile phones, £300 in cash, bags containing considerable quantities of cannabis and an assortment of ominous gear, including handcuffs and gloves.

Barrett has now been convicted in court, having pleaded guilty, admitting possession of an imitation firearm, possession of cannabis with intent to supply, and possession of criminal cash.

He now faces the prospect of prison time.

DC Claire Smith, from West Midlands Major Crime Proactive Team, reflected on the achievement: "it’s great that another potentially deadly weapon has been taken off the streets.”

Last year, shootings in the West Midlands fell by more than a quarter, from 126 to 92.

Over the same time period, the number of guns recovered rose by 25%, from 121 to 152.

This search was part of Operation Target, WMP's vigilant effort, backed by a coalition of partners, which wages war against the scourge of gun violence, drug trafficking, money laundering, and the exploitation of the vulnerable.

The battle to dismantle the networks putting deadly firearms in the hands of criminals continues.

Well, that’s all for now. But until our next article, please stay tuned and stay informed, but most of all stay safe, and I’ll see you then.
