A recent knife incident in a secondary school in Birmingham, which left the victim battling mental health issues and uncertain about her education plans, is highlighting the growing concerns around safety in schools, violence against women and girls and the threat of pervasive toxic masculinity.

These issues are an increasing worry for parents anxious for the safety and wellbeing of their children who now call for a united message that demeaning attitudes towards women and girls have no place in schools.
Raising awareness is the first step towards addressing this issue.
In the incident at Perryfields Academy, a male secondary school pupil had made objectifying comments to a female classmate. Inside an educational establishment everyone should be able to focus on their studies without unwanted harassment.
The girl was as a good student with good grades and teachers' reports.
Taking things a step further, the boy then demanded that she perform a sex act on him. This type of remark can be experienced as deeply aggressive, and to make such a comment, in a classroom, suggests a toxic level of entitlement and a totally insensitive attitude.
Furthermore, it suggests an appalling lack of life skills and knowledge in how to interact with the opposite sex in an acceptable fashion which could lead to the positive outcome of getting a girlfriend. There are clear, tried and tested models of behaviour, rooted in manners and respect, which allow young people to negotiate such situations. They worked in the past and can surely work once again?
Upon the girl firmly rejecting the boy, his response was to take a kitchen knife which was in the home economics classroom, hold it towards her and threaten to "shank" the girl.
The large, sharp knife was restricted from ordinary use and should not have been accessible to the pupils in the home economics class that say.
The results of this have been traumatic. The girl who was meant to feel demeaned and emotionally annihilated by the boy's display has begun to suffer panic attacks.
The parents of the girl feel let down. The boy received only a suspension for his domineering intimidation acts, with the school switching him from the girl's class to a different class and ordering him to avoid the victim.
This has been strongly criticised by the parents who say that this fails to send the right message about misogynistic behaviour, violence
against women and girls, knife crime, coercive and controlling behaviour and school violence.
Furthermore, the girl is continuing to suffer and feel unsafe to such a degree that parents are being forced to consider disrupting her education by switching schools, thus making the victim pay for the boy's own actions.
West Midlands Police are investigating the incident, and we are all hoping that a satisfactory outcome is provided for the victim's family and that the school rethinks its actions.
One thing which this appalling case implies is that the real world consequences of toxic masculinity, which we often see extend into domestic violence, are not clear to boys.
It is possible that the distress caused is trivialised, with popular men's self help injunctions of "taking responsibility for your emotions" being distorted and twisted onto victim blaming attitudes.
This highlights how, without an awareness of the messaging which boys and young men are exposed to, we cannot combat these harms. This is why it is so useful to stop and take a broader look at social media and the new world of controversial online influencers.
Introduction:
In today's digital age, social media has become a powerful platform for individuals to express their opinions and influence others. Unfortunately, some online influencers with a large following have chosen to promote toxic masculinity, perpetuating harmful stereotypes and attitudes towards women. This article aims to shed light on the real-world consequences of such behaviour and emphasises the importance of protecting young minds from these negative influences.
1. The Rise of Misogynistic Online Influencers:
The internet has given rise to a new breed of influencers who use their platforms to spread misogynistic ideologies. These influencers often have a large following of impressionable young individuals who look up to them as role models. By promoting toxic masculinity, they perpetuate harmful beliefs that can have lasting effects on society.
2. Impact on Young Minds:
Young followers of these influencers are particularly vulnerable to their messages. They may internalise the toxic attitudes towards women, leading to a distorted perception of gender roles and relationships. This can hinder their ability to form healthy and respectful connections with others, perpetuating a cycle of toxic behaviour.
3. Reinforcing Harmful Stereotypes:
Misogynistic online influencers often rely on stereotypes to gain attention and followers. By promoting these stereotypes, they reinforce harmful societal norms that limit the potential of both men and women. Young minds exposed to such content may grow up believing that women are inferior or that men must conform to rigid expectations of masculinity.
4. Normalising Objectification and Harassment:
One of the most concerning consequences of misogynistic online influencers is the normalisation of objectification and harassment. By treating women as mere objects of desire, they contribute to a culture that devalues consent and disregards the emotional well-being of others. This can lead to an increase in real-world instances of harassment and assault.
5. Impact on Mental Health:
The constant exposure to toxic masculinity promoted by these influencers can have severe consequences on the mental health of young individuals. It can lead to feelings of inadequacy, low self-esteem, and even depression. The pressure to conform to unrealistic standards of masculinity can be overwhelming, causing young minds to question their own worth.
6. Perpetuating Gender Inequality:
Misogynistic online influencers not only harm young individuals but also perpetuate gender inequality on a larger scale. By promoting toxic masculinity, they undermine the progress made towards gender equality and hinder efforts to create a more inclusive and respectful society. It is crucial to address these influencers' influence and challenge their harmful narratives.
Conclusion:
The real-world consequences of controversial misogynistic online influencers with a large audience of young followers who promote toxic masculinity cannot be ignored. Their actions perpetuate harmful stereotypes, normalise objectification and harassment, and have a detrimental impact on the mental health of young individuals. It is our responsibility to protect young minds from these negative influences and promote a culture of respect, equality, and empathy. By raising awareness and challenging these influencers, we can create a safer and more inclusive online environment for all.
A wide range of measures must be considered, but first of all is awareness.
Many other incidents may go unreported.
In this changing world, many controversial online influencers, in the so-called red pill manosphere and beyond, talk of traditional masculinity and traditional values, but the selfishness and toxic, domineering ways, the brittle egos and antisocial attitudes are anything but the image of a hero. To rectify this, perhaps we need those who stayed true to the virtues of the past while combining them with the improved awareness of the modern era to step forward and retake their rightful place as role models who will lead a generation of boys away from misogyny.
