Remembrance Sunday Market Massacre: Knifeman Kills 77-Year-Old, Two Injured as Hero Traders Subdue Suspect in Chaotic London Attack

A man has been charged with murder following a brutal stabbing spree at East Street Market, Walworth, on Remembrance Sunday. The attack, which unfolded shortly before the traditional two-minute silence, left one man dead and two others injured, sending shockwaves through the busy market scene.

Emergency services were alerted to reports of multiple stabbings at around 10:40 AM on Sunday, 10 November. The primary victim, identified as 77-year-old Hilkiah McLeggan, suffered fatal wounds. Witnesses recounted his heart-wrenching final words:

“I’m gone, it’s the end of my life,”

As he lay dying on the market ground. Despite efforts by bystanders and paramedics, McLeggan tragically died at the scene.

Two other men were also injured during the rampage. They were swiftly taken to hospital, where one remains in critical condition. The sudden and violent nature of the attack plunged the bustling market into chaos, with shoppers fleeing and stalls left abandoned in the ensuing panic.

The Metropolitan Police have charged 66-year-old Ali Musse, a man with no fixed address, with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder. He was apprehended at the scene by officers after being subdued by market traders.

Witness accounts highlighted the bravery of these individuals, who used metal bars and physical force to detain the suspect until police arrived. Wasim Hussain, a trader at the market, described the swift intervention of his colleagues: “They just put him down, and they waited for the police. It was the general public—most of them work in the market.”

The aftermath of the attack left a lasting impression on those present. Nihad Osmam, a 27-year-old fruit stallholder, described the scene as “chaos,” with many abandoning their stalls in fear. Another witness reported seeing ambulances arriving with flashing lights, rushing the injured to nearby hospitals. A bystander remarked on the chilling experience of witnessing such violence close to home: “I know stabbings happen every day in London, but experiencing it close to home is frightening.” A shop worker who observed the knifeman added, “I saw a person coming down the road, he had a knife. It makes me scared working in the area; nothing like this has happened before.”

Chief Superintendent Seb Adjei-Addoh, head of Southwark’s Met Police division, praised the actions of the civilians who assisted during the incident, noting the “horrific” nature of the attack. He announced an increased police presence in the area to provide reassurance to both local residents and business owners in East Street. He stated, “There will be an increased policing presence in the Walworth area as we work alongside our partners to provide reassurance to local people and small businesses operating in East Street.”

The Metropolitan Police continue their investigation and urge anyone with information or footage of the incident to come forward.
