Mike Amesbury Resigns as MP, Triggering By-Election
By Jason King

Mike Amesbury has formally resigned as the MP for Runcorn and Helsby, writing to Chancellor Rachel Reeves to confirm his departure. His decision comes after he was convicted of assaulting a constituent, for which he was initially jailed before winning an appeal that suspended his sentence.
In a statement, Amesbury described the incident as “deeply regrettable” and admitted in interview that he had consumed “six or seven pints on an empty stomach” before the altercation. “I am sincerely sorry to Paul Fellows, my family, colleagues, and constituents,” he said.
A by-election will now be held to replace him, although voters were always going to have their say. Even if Amesbury had not resigned, his conviction made him subject to a recall petition, which, if successful, would have triggered a by-election. However, his resignation has now sped up the timeline.
This contest will be a key test for Reform UK, who came second in the seat last year but are now facing internal turmoil following the Rupert Lowe scandal. The by-election will be a test of Reform’s ability to capitalise on discontent with the major parties.
Well, that’s all for now. But until our next article, please stay tuned, stay informed, but most of all stay safe, and I’ll see you then.
