In a shocking twist of violence, Courtney Ellis, 38, has been handed a minimum 35-year sentence for the murder Rapper Smallz, the also known as Michael. Met detectives employed cutting-edge technology, utilizing CCTV and phone data, to unravel the sinister plot behind the apparent gang-related killing. Ellis was also found guilty of attempted murder and perverting the course of justice.

The trial, spanning nine weeks at the Old Bailey, concluded on February 2, 2024, with Ellis facing life imprisonment. The tragic incident unfolded on July 5, 2019, outside a chicken shop in Wembley, where Smallz, 32, awaited his meal. A masked assailant, mere meters away, fired a fatal shot, marking an escalation in gang tensions.

Detective Superintendent Helen Rance, leading the investigation, highlighted the senseless nature of Smallz's murder, describing it as a grim reminder of the futility of gang violence plaguing London's streets. Post-shooting, eyewitnesses reported the assailant fleeing to a waiting car, later identified as a blue Mini with false plates, driven by Ellis.

An unsuccessful attempt to target another victim ensued, captured on CCTV in Wembley. Detectives meticulously tracked the Mini's journey through hours of footage, unveiling attempts to conceal identities by lowering sun visors. Unregistered phones linked Ellis and an accomplice, Christopher Kyei, revealing their premeditated actions leading up to Smallz's murder.

Despite denials during police questioning, the evidence, including photos, voice notes, and WhatsApp messages, solidified the connection between Ellis and Kyei, showcasing a history of violence. Smallz's mother, Carol Campbell, expressed the family's devastation, emphasizing the irreplaceable loss and thanking the investigative team for their tireless efforts.

Detective Superintendent Rance acknowledged the challenges faced by Smallz's family throughout the prolonged investigation.

Mobile phone data played a pivotal role, outlining the movements of the perpetrators and their meticulous planning. However, the identity of the gunman remains shrouded in silence, urging the public to come forward with any information to bring justice for Smallz and solve the mystery behind the fatal bullet.
